If you’ve ever wanted to try foundation paper piecing but felt intimidated by all those lines and numbers, this project is for you. This beginner-friendly angel quilt block can be finished in an evening, and today I’m going to show you exactly how it comes together.
One of the things I love about angels in Scripture is that they always point us toward God. They’re messengers. They encourage. They protect. They remind people that God is at work even when they can’t see the whole picture…and honestly, quilting can feel a little bit like that sometimes. When you’re foundation paper piecing, you don’t always see the finished design right away. You trust the process one step at a time—and eventually something beautiful appears.
Download the Angel Quilt Block Pattern
To make this even easier, I’ve made this angel block available as a free pattern. Enter your email address, and I’ll send you:
- the angel quilt block foundation paper piece pattern and angel template
- instructions for how to sew
- complete video tutorial walking you through each step of the block
The pattern and template are sent instantly, so check your spam folder and promotions folder if you don’t see it in your inbox!

To sew this block, you’ll only need a few supplies as shown below…and if you missed our review of quilting supplies for beginner Christian quilters, you can check it out here.
- fabric scraps for background, wings, robe, hair, skin, and halo
- printer paper (the thinner/cheaper, the better)
- sewing machine
- iron
- scissors
.
Remember…this quilt block is beginner-friendly so you CAN do this! If something doesn’t feel perfect, that’s okay. Your first foundation paper pieced block is not about perfection, but about learning and finishing something you can be proud of.
In fact, this is one of the reasons I love foundation paper piecing – the crisp points and clean lines make any beginner look like a professional!

If this feels a little strange at first, that’s completely normal. Foundation paper piecing may even remind you a bit of the “paint by number” projects you did as a child! I promise, you’ll grow to love this style of quilting as much as I do.
Once you get the hang of this quilt block, I know you’ll want to make more. Here’s a link to all our Christian quilt blocks that you can piece together to make a single wall hanging, pot holder, back of a denim jacket, or even a full quilt like our Women of the Bible quilt or the Jesse Tree quilt!

…and Welcome to Week 24 in the Shades of Gray Quilt Block Tour!
The Shades of Gray Quilt Block Tour is a year long sew along of sorts. Every week in 2026, thirty different quilt pattern designers will release a free 6″ finished quilt block. Some of the blocks are applique, some are patchwork, others (like mine) are foundation paper pieced, and all are fun. You can collect the blocks you like or collect all of them and share your progress in the Facebook Group. For a full list of designers, the blocks to date, and sponsors visit the official Shades of Gray Tour page.
What ties these blocks together? They’re all made with shades of gray with a pop of color, like the yellow halo in our angel quilt block. I’ve turned my gray block into a little dog bed alongside some of the other blocks. Didn’t it turn out so cute? If you want to make this, it’s so easy – check out the video above on how it came together!

As part of the tour, here are the blocks of the two designers who just shared, as well as the two designers whose blocks will be shared over the coming weeks:
- Crafty Staci with a Nightshade Quilt Block
- Chantelle Bailey Design with an Unwrapped Star Quilt Block
- COMING SOON – A Quiltery with Tulips Quilt Block
- COMING SOON – Memory Barn Studio with a Butterfly Quilt Block
