I’m *so* excited to share a quilt pattern – and fabrics – that are super special to me! Introducing the Our Lady of Guadalupe quilt *and* fabrics, both of which I created to work together. You guys, this was so much fun to create! The inspiration for the Our Lady of Guadalupe quilt pattern and fabrics came from my friend Angie’s remodel. She and her husband purchased the most beautiful Mexican tiles from Mexico, each hand painted in the most brilliant colors.
I wanted to capture the gorgeous look of these hand painted tiles *and* pull in an element of faith, so I started with the Our Lady of Guadalupe image that inspired our Sew-a-Saint dolls. The vibrant colors were the inspiration behind the quilt itself!
From there, I designed a quilt that would allow for a repeating pattern with a central point that was reminiscent of those beautiful hand painted Mexican tiles. Once the basic design was ready, it was time to design the fabrics! This was such a fun process – especially because two of the fabrics were designed to be fussy cut! Woohoo!
The fabrics are all inspired by the Our Lady of Guadalupe fabric. This fabric is designed to be cut at a 4.5″x4.5″ size, easily done by cutting from the center of each floral design surrounding her. The second and third fabrics are comprised of blue and yellow stars, each designed at a different scale. They provide an almost solid to contrast against the OLG image, letting her really shine. The fourth fabric is a bold red which mirrors her mantle, with gentle golden flowers and swirls adding visual interest. The fifth fabric, probably my favorite, is one that completely changes depending on how you cut it. You can see all these gorgeous fabric in more detail here!
Let’s take a deeper look at the tile fabric. As mentioned, it’s designed to be cut in two different ways as an 8.5″x8.5″ block…though it repeats so beautifully as a full fabric. A close look at the fabric has a hand painted, worn look to it – almost as if it were well worn and loved. Isn’t it amazing that both these blocks come from the same fabrics, and change depending on how it’s cut? I love fussy cutting fabrics!
Let’s look at the quilt itself; you’ll see how the center of the quilt is the image of OLG surrounded by blue fabrics. from there, the OLG tile fabric surrounds her, with either the red medallion *or* the cut that highlights the four floral designs rotating around her. I alternated blues and yellow fabrics to further create the repeating tile design with the blue OLG as the center.
Looking closer at the quilt, you’ll see how beautiful these rows come together. With each detail thought out, each block compliments the one next to it while all being part of the larger design. I love this quilt so much!
