Today I’m excited to work on a new project with you: we’ll be sewing a Holy Week table runner from the Holy Week fabric panel that you can keep up during Lent and then flip over for Easter! This table runner was inspired by the Holy Week quilt, which is fully foundation paper pieced. I wanted to create a more simple project that came together in just a few hours as opposed to a few days. So, each of the blocks in the Holy Week quilt were turned into a beautiful fabric panel, with each of the eight days of Holy Week represented:
- Palm Sunday: donkey and palm branch
- Holy Monday: temple in Jerusalem where Jesus challenged the money changers
- Holy Tuesday: fig tree that, upon reentering Jerusalem, was dried and withered after being cursed
- Spy Wednesday: the coin bag that Judas was paid with
- Holy Thursday: bread and wine from the Last Supper
- Good Friday: three crosses on the hillside
- Holy Saturday: a single window lit in a building in Jerusalem as the disciples sit and wait
- Easter Sunday: the open tomb
Each block in this panel finishes at 5″x5″, making it the perfect size for a wall hanging, banner, or table runner. Panel size, including white trim, is 18″x21″ and is printed on quality quilting cotton fabric. So, now that you’re familiar with the panel, which you can pick up in our shop for this project, let’s get started sewing!
WHAT YOU NEED
- Holy Week fabric panel
- scrappy fabric in pinks and purples
- Easter fabric for backing (half yard)
- variegated thread in pink
- low loft batting cut to 37″x15″ (will be trimmed down)
- basting spray
HOW TO MAKE
- There were so many little steps that I ended up making a full video to show you how. Use the chapters in the video to skip around, jump ahead, or to re-review a section. Happy sewing!
One last note – this panel also ties in, day for day, to one of the books in our Patchwork Devotionals for Quilters series. Patchwork of Salvation is a Holy Week devotional focused on the eight days from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, following Jesus from his entrance into Jerusalem through his glorious resurrection. Each of the eight days in the devotional include a scripture reading, devotion, and reflection space that connect to that day’s theme. There are even a few recipes included! Separate pages have been included to record your notes, and thought provoking questions accompany each day’s reflection. Beautifully designed quilt blocks, tying directly to that days reading, create gorgeous imagery throughout this stunning book. This devotional makes a meaningful gift for yourself during the Lenten season, and can be completed either individually or as part of your quilting guild or sewing community.
