Each year, on the 50th day from Easter Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost – the day that commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and a few followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles:
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues,* as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
It’s the descent of the spirit, along with the call of each of us to go proclaim the Good News, that we celebrate each year! While our in-home celebrations look quite different than the original day of Pentecost (there are no real tongues of fire coming down from above!), we have a lot of fun celebrating together and talking about ways that we can each live out our baptismal promises and bring God’s Word to others.
